Scholarship is now available and welcome to apply for the All-English MA Program in Anthropology at East China Normal University (ECNU)! Located in Shanghai, ECNU is one of the top universities in China. A two-year all-English MA program in anthropology is now available at ECNU. The deadlines for application are March 31, 2017 (for Chinese Government Scholarship) and May 15, 2017 (for Shanghai Government Scholarship). Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens and should possess a BA degree in anthropology or closely related field. There is no requirement on Chinese language. Scholarship can be applied for online. The generous scholarship covers tuition fee, accommodation on campus, a comprehensive medical insurance, basic learning materials, besides a monthly living allowance (about RMB 3,000 yuan/month). The program consists of four core courses, four optional courses, a 6-month fieldwork, and a MA thesis. The research interests of faculty members cover two areas: socio-cultural anthropology in general and applied anthropology, concentrating particularly on religion, money/economy, food, ethnobotany, visual culture, and ethnic minorities in China.

Categories and applicants
1) Type A (Full scholarship)
Exempt from tuition fee, and accommodation on campus; provide comprehensive medical insurance and monthly allowance (Doctoral students: CNY3500; Master students: CNY3000; Undergraduate: CNY2500)
Applicants must be excellent international students in pursuit of degrees.
2) Type B (Partial scholarship)
Exempt from tuition fee, and provide comprehensive medical insurance.
Applicants must be excellent international students of degrees.
Eligibility
1) Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens and in good health.
2) Education background and age limit: Applicants for master’s degree program must have bachelor’s degree and be under 35.
3) Applicants cannot be the holders of any other kinds of Chinese government scholarship

Application procedures
1. Application Form. Applicant should register and apply online at www.study-Shanghai.org (the institutional code of ECNU is 10269), download the application form and print it out.
2. Highest diploma (notarized photocopy): Applicant who is university student or at work should also provide studying certificates from the university or working certificates from the company. Documents in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with notarized translations in Chinese or English.
3. Academic transcripts (notarized photocopy): Transcripts in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with notarized translations in Chinese or English.
4. A study or research plan. All applicants are required to submit a study or research plan. It must be in Chinese or in English and no less than 1000 words.
5. Recommendation letters: Applicants in pursuit of Master or Ph.D degree must submit two letters of recommendation in Chinese or English by professors or associate professors.
6. Health certificate (photocopy).
7. Applicants for Chinese-taught majors should have obtained HSK of level 5 or above.
Applicants for English-taught programs must submit proof of English Language proficiency.
8. Applicants for Music major and Fine Arts must submit their own works.

Chinese Government Scholarship program is established by the Ministry of Education of P. R. China (hereinafter referred to as MOE) aiming to provide supports to Chinese HEIs in building high level universities, and promote Chinese higher education brand on an international basis. 7. HSK (the Chinese Proficiency Test) Certificate. Applicants without any Chinese Language knowledge is required to take the remedial Chinese language course for 1 yearbefore academic study. HSK certificate is not requiredif the courses are taught in English.

All-English MA Program in Anthropology

The Research Institute of Anthropology in the School of Social Development, ECNU, was established in the autumn of 2011 by Professor Nicholas Tapp, who was an internationally well-known anthropologist and specialist on the Miao (Hmong) studies, and has now completed highly successful years of its existence.
For our all-English MA program in socio-cultural Anthropology, there is no requirement on Chinese language. This program may lead to the PhD, or can be undertaken on its own. Our fields cover general socio-cultural anthropology and applied anthropology, with particular specialities and courses in the anthropology of money, anthropology of food, visual anthropology, anthropology of development, anthropology of religion, ethnobotany, ethnicity and minorities in China.
The all-English MA program consists of four core courses (Cultural Anthropology, Anthropological Theory, Anthropological Methods and Ethnography of Chinese Society), four optional courses, a 6-month fieldwork, and a MA thesis. Major elective courses include Issues of Power and Religion, the Anthropology of Food, Visual and Media Anthropology, Anthropology of Money, and Economic Anthropology. Other options in urban anthropology, anthropology of the state, anthropology of tourism, and ethnobotany are also available.
The four core courses are taught in the first semester (September - January). Students also need to choose another four selective courses in the second semester (March - June). The MA program includes a period (6 months) of intensive fieldwork, on which the thesis will be written in English. The Institute also includes the Centre of Ethnicity and Development which concentrates research and teaching expertise in the areas of development and ethnicity. Totally, students need 21 credits from the anthropology institute and 9 credits from other departments to complete the MA program.
The master degree thesis should be 30,000-50,000 words in length (excluding footnotes and references). It must be based on original research, mark a new contribution to knowledge, show knowledge of relevant literature, and be well and clearly written and presented. Normally, in the third semester, original research for the thesis must be conducted normally based on fieldwork of 6 months. A proposal for field research should be submitted before that for entrance to the field. Supervision of the thesis is by a Panel or Committee of up to 3 members with professional doctorate qualifications in Anthropology. The thesis will be examined by one internal examiner (from the institute) and one outside examiner (from another institute/department or another university), nominated by the Main Supervisor. Three or five professors will be organized for the MA thesis defense.
